Tell Me Questions – Before Test
1. Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Footbrake shouldn’t feel soft or spongy, and the parking brake shouldn’t come up too high.
2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
In the handbook, with a reliable tyre pressure gauge when they are cold and don’t forget the spare.
3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
Top of your ears or eyes need to be in the middle of head rest.
4. Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts bulges, and a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm.
5. Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
Turn them on and have a look around the car.
6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system (ABS).
Orange warning light should show on dashboard if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
Explain you’d operate the hazards (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle. Or if when turning an indicator on it flashes faster than normal it, then a bulb is not working on that side.
8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.
Push the brake pedal and use a reflection in windows or doors, or ask someone someone to help.
9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Turn the car on and turn that we are slightly to the left or right if it’s stiff, then you know it’s not working correctly.
10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
I’d use them when visibility drops below 100 m and turn lights and fog lamps on by turning the switch away from me (indicator switch)
11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.
Pull switch towards you(with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.(blue on dashboard)
12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.
(This is D) look for the oil level dipstick take it out and wipe it clean dip it back in again and make sure the levels between the minimum and maximum.
13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
(This is C) and it has a thermometer icon on the cap. and you’d make sure the levels between the minimum and maximum.
14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
(This is B) and you make sure the level is between the minimum and maximum yellow cap.
15. Tell me how you would check the window washer water level.
(This is A) and you make sure that the water washer level is topped upas this car doesn’t have a min or max marker, it has a window icon on the cap.
